Volume IV of this journal contains an account of Sarah Shurtleff's travels around predominantly England. Tourist attractions and places visited in London include: St Paul's cathedral, Westminster, the Tower of London, Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square, Somerset House, St Thomas's Hospital, the Crystal Palace, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, the Royal Mint, Waterloo Bridge, Charing Cross, Blackfriars, Regent Street, Holborn, Big Ben, the National Gallery, the British Museum, the West End, Marlborough House, South Kensington and Kensington Palace. Shurtleff also writes about the lives and works of Wordsworth, Ruskin and Coleridge.
Sarah and her husband then travel to Cumbria to see the lakes. Includes a list of the 'Women of the Châteaux'. More everyday details are also included such as: the hotels they stayed in, the food they ate and the acquaintances they met.
Throughout the journal there are numerous paste-ins and inserts of ephemera, such as picture cards, illustrating places they visted and local people.
