Volume I of this journal contains an account of Sarah Shurtleff's travels to and around predominantly Italy with her husband. Also included is a description of their sea voyage from North America to Europe.
Sights seen include: the Campo Santo Monumentale in Pisa, the Temple of Paestum, and the Rock of Gibraltar. In particular, Shurtleff describes witnessing the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In general, other attractions include: churches, convents, temples, ruins and ancient cities. More everyday details are also included, such as the hotels they stayed in, the food they ate and the acquaintances they met.
Throughout the journal there are numerous paste-ins and inserts of ephemera, such as picture cards, illustrating places they visited and local people. Sarah spends time describing the places and people they see, writing about the living conditions, local customs and clothing.
