- Description
-
This journal contains an index specific to this volume. The volume is illustrated with pictures and other ephemera she collected, and with photographs, many of which were taken by her husband, Asahel Shurtleff. The journal contains Sarah's extensive 'Notes on Art' and 'Notes on St Peters'. Some of the many tourist attractions she visited in Italy include: St Peter's Basilica, Mount Vesuvius, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, the Sistine Chapel, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Campo Santo.
A large part of the journal also documents where they went and what they saw when in Germany and the Netherlands. For example: Dresden art gallery, Bismarck's birthplace, Goethe's birthplace, and many towers, monuments, bridges, fountains and churches.
