Sarah Anne Shurtleff describes her experience of the sea voyage to Europe from the USA. The journal includes a general index for both of the volumes, and a list of 'Countries visited in order of visit'. The volume is illustrated with picture cards and other ephemera she collected and with photographs, many of which were taken by her husband, Asahel Shurtleff.
Some of the many tourist attractions she visited include: Eaton Hall, Harwarden Castle, Shakespeare's home in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick castle, various Oxford colleges, Westminster abbey, the Crystal Palace, the Tower of London, the Royal Albert Hall, Canterbury cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Tuileries, the Palace of Versaillies, Lake Geneva, various glaciers, Lake Lucerne, St Mark's Square and the Grand Canal in Venice, Santa Maria Novella, Palazzo Pitti and others. Includes a typed copy of a poem entitled 'The Jew' dated September 22, 1898.
